Vaccinated Hudson Valley Resident Infected With Delta Variant
ULSTER COUNTY, NY — A resident of Ulster County who had been vaccinated against the coronavirus tested positive for the delta variant of the virus.
County Executive Pat Ryan said in a statement that the state notified the county Monday about the infection.
"This incident is a critical reminder that while we have made great strides in fighting this virus," he said, "we are not out of the woods yet.
"I ask that all residents remain vigilant and proactive to blunt any further spread of the virus," Ryan said.
He said the person who tested positive has since recovered, and the fact that they were vaccinated likely spared them from the worst impacts of the variant.
"I encourage everyone to continue to get vaccinated and we must continue to take all precautions necessary, even if you are vaccinated, to stop any further spread of COVID-19," Ryan said.
New York's Department of Health reported last week there were 122 total delta variant cases to date, the Poughkeepsie Journal said, though it wasn't clear if that number included the 104 cases in New York City.
The delta variant was estimated by health officials to be 50 percent more transmissible than the original virus. It was first identified in India a wave of infections there in April and May.
