Tax experts have said prosecutions centered on fringe benefits are rare, but some have compared the charges to the case against Leona Helmsley, a New York real estate developer who was convicted of evading $1.2 million in taxes in the 1980s.

Leona Mindy Roberts Helmsley (July 4, 1920 – August 20, 2007) was an American businesswoman and convicted felon. Her flamboyant personality and reputation for tyrannical behavior earned her the nickname Queen of Mean.[11] After allegations of non-payment were made by contractors hired to improve Helmsley's Connecticut home, she was investigated and convicted of federal income tax evasion and other crimes in 1989. Although having initially received a sentence of sixteen years, she was required to serve only nineteen months in prison and two months under house arrest. During the trial, a former housekeeper testified that she had heard Helmsley say: "We don't pay taxes; only the little people pay taxes", a quote which was identified with her for the rest of her life.

I've discussed the condo. I think that can easily be construed as a business expense.

Not sure what the quote is for cash during the "holidays" as I don't know if he worked during them. He may have done.

Cars can be used for business purposes.

These sorts of expenses are all arguably business-related. The prosecutor is choosing to treat them as personal use.

So what you say is a "scam" is what the prosecutor alleges is a scam.

I think many of the charges look likely to be defensible when explained by defence counsel.

You can't say that paying for school fees has a business use. But it turned out Trump was responsible for those.

It's a weak case from what I can see. And I don't trust US prosecutors whose goal is to turn Weisselberg. Their mindset is extortionate. He's being treated like he's a pawn on their chessboard. As if his own life and values and integrity are meaningless. As if he had no independent capacity.

Just because NY attorneys allege something doesn't mean they understand a person's actual motives and behaviours.

They are after Trump. I'd prefer that they address Trump direct rather than try to turn Weisselberg into a sort of mafioso informant.

I like that he is standing his ground. I think he is doing so because he has been personally careful. That's my reading. But we'll see.
