There's a lot going on right now. I went to the new property Saturday and found the barn's first floor loaded with metal roofing materials and a sign for the roofing contractor posted at the street. When's the roof going up? This week, I bet.

A water heater has been delivered as well.

The house has a tub/shower unit the plumber ordered and which is the wrong size (it's too big and doesn't fit), and a triangular garden tub I ordered and that's the right size. The plumber has begun laying pipes.

The carpenter says our order is 10 weeks out, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has it done a bit sooner. He requested and was given our sink, around which he will build the kitchen cabinets. Who'd have thought that the sink calls the shots? It's oversized, though and he needs to take that into account. (It will be nice to be able to put oversized things like cookie sheets and turkey pots into the kitchen sink and have them sit flat.)

The house will have seven overhead fans, 3 in the basement and 4 on the main floor. Home Depot had a sale so we bought seven very basic ones, all identical. They came via UPS last week. These were really cheap 3-speed, 52 inch fans, but my initial thought was that for the basement and guest bedrooms, they'll be fine as long as they work. For the living room and master bedroom, we MIGHT decide we want something fancier, but we're going to initially have these cheap ones put in. If I decide I want to replace two of them later, I can probably do it myself. How hard could replacing two fans be?And I suspect I'll never feel the need. We aren't out to impress the neighbors, after all. We just want a house that WE like - and we like practical. I'd rather put the money into things that matter.

My wife and I spent part of last weekend making detailed, room-by-room (and exterior) plans for our electrical needs. My wife needs to write them up for the electrician. She'll probably do that today.

And I met with the insulation contractor two weeks ago. Most of the perimeter insulation will be foam, and all of it will have a very high R-value. We'll be sound-proofing the bathrooms and two utility rooms but not the rest. (As I told the insulation guy, with just two of us living here, I'd want to hear any noises we ever get coming from other parts of the house or the garage.)

I have no photos to post, but if the roof is installed soon, that may change.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
