"She hasn't been exposed to it before, at least not to the degree she suddenly is now."

Not buyin' that, De ... this is not her first rodeo. She won four golds and one bronze in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She's had plenty of time to get acclimated to the fame and the pressure.

Beldin:

Re: “ If you don't have the mental stability to compete, then why did you try out in the first place?”
I doubt she realized the media circus that was going to be established around her. She was practically anointed the winner before the competition began.

I didn't know who Simone Biles was a few days ago, yet EVERY pundit, reporter, commentator and the NBC network were proclaiming her the gymnastics G.O.A.T. That's why I figured she'd crack. While the mental aspect of the sport is vital, this the the mental aspect of the world press. That's completely different from the mental aspect of doing a flip. She hasn't been exposed to it before, at least not to the degree she suddenly is now.

Her handlers should have isolated the team until after the Olympics. She should have been kept in the dark about what everyone was saying. As for your question about why she felt "the need to withdraw in order to protect yourself?" - I think it was because she was going to have a nervous breakdown. That happens. One of my son's friends is that way with regard to music... actually, with regard to everything she does. She's way too worried about who she's going to let down if she makes a mistake. Simone Biles is apparently the same way except that the media has made it pretty clear that she'll let down the entire country if she's less than perfect. She couldn't handle that.
