What do I think the explanation is for her quitting right before the finals? I obviously don't know for sure, but I strongly suspect that she was afraid of underperforming. Problem is ... her quitting doesn't affect just her ... she is part of an overall team. You don't flake out and walk out on your team after taking it all the way to the finals. You give it your best and let the chips fall where they may. It's a competition, not life and death. Apparently, her psyche is too feeble to know the difference ... and that quitting reflects FAR worse on her than competing and falling short of her goal.

Re: “She's had plenty of time to get acclimated to the fame and the pressure. ”
After reading a bit about the 2016 Olympics in Rio, I have to grudgingly agree with you. Of course, in 2016 she wasn't carrying the mantle of G.O.A.T. And maybe the 2016 handlers did a better job of keeping the press and what they were saying away from the athletes.

If it's not a greater than usual amount of outside pressure that caused her to lose confidence, what do YOU think the explanation is?

Maybe she just wants to keep the G.O.A.T. title and figures she won't if she's actually beaten by someone at this Olympics.
