Well . . .
When I use GirlFriends little wi-fi box I can (usually) watch videos on it. When I use my I-phone videos do not download fast enough . . . But I use the cheap T-mobile phone service with all the internet I can eat . . . And depending on the time of day it can be slower.

A 'surplus' computer I took home . . with Linux on it . . When I plugged the 'linux compatible' USB wi-fi adapter all I had to do was plug the network pass word into it and it was good to go. (When I tried one that did not say linux compatible it would not work.)

And then is the USB port on the computer 1, 2, or three? That can make quite a difference in both how fast the wi-fi works, and how fast a USB drive works.

USB1.1: This was the original version of the USB,
........Full speed: 12 Mbps
.
USB 2.0: The USB 2.0 standard is a development of USB 1.1 which was released in April 2000. The main difference when compared to USB 1.1 was the data transfer speed increase up to a "High Speed" rate of 480 Mbps.
.
USB 3.1: USB 3.1 is also known as SuperSpeed+. The use of USB 3.1 doubles the speed of data transfer when compared to USB 3.0. It provides raw data transfer of 10 Gbit/s,
.
USB 4: To keep ahead of the market, the USB-IF introduced the USB4 specification on 29 August 2019. The new standard provides more flexibility and functionality. It is based around the Thunderbolt 3 protocol specification and as such it supports data throughput up to 40 Gbps. It is compatible with Thunderbolt 3, and also backwards compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0.

Re: “You ever consider a USB wi-fi adapter?”
No, I haven't considered it. Good to know that it's an option, though. As you've seen, I don't have many expansion slots.

I'd expect a USB network adapter to be slow. USB hard drive access sure is.
Re: “(If you are looking to buy one for a
Linux box make sure the package says
'Linux compatible' on it.)”
Will do. I don't have any immediate plans for the linux box, though. To download software, I'll need a card but right now I don't know what I might want. The install included LibreOffice, and that's probably a good start toward meeting my needs.
