We've had them both and three waves altogether including the one last year. Our experience was this:
We lost 43k lives to the original Chinese version of the virus, covid 19, during 2020.
The alpha (UK) variant of covid 21 was more virulent and deadly than covid 19. It killed around 85k people. But one dose of vaccine was enough to reduce the risk of even catching the alpha variant to near zero. Fortunately, our vaccination programme got underway very early.
The delta (Indian) variant is far more contagious than the alpha. It devastated unvaccinated India. Two doses isn't enough to stop you catching it but your chance of dying from it if you are vaccinated is about 1/15th what it was with the alpha when unvaccinated. We've had less than 5k deaths from the delta, backed up by almost complete vaccination of everyone over 30 and nearly complete vaccination of the 18-30 age group.
The delta is far worse than the alpha and covid 19. It really pays to wear a mask and to be vaccinated. The governor of Florida is nuts.
