Its only my opinion but you would be better off with a new high SEER rated air conditioner. WHY????
Because when it is HUMID and Hot all a fan does is bring thru moving hot, moist, damp air...
The A/C unit will remove the moisture from that air and circulate non-moist air that is actually cool... You can always set the thermostat to around 74 degrees and it won't a whole lot but it will be very energy efficient..
I have a Heat Pump that is 16 SEER. In the summer it is a central Air conditioner. After the past couple days here I waas so glad we had it. It was in the upper 90's and extrememly humid.. A BAD combination for me personally. I do not do well in hot and humid.. One reason I could not live in the south lke Ribs.. My lungs would not take it..
I believe for a little bit mroe money you would be far better off for a long time to come to have the air conditioner and I might add you can always add a whole house fan for the not so hot and humid days...
Just my thinking.. That high seer unit will not cost you very much in electric trust me. Mine doesn't. I have Carrier..
