People wonder whether we should feel dishonourable by abandoning Afghanistan.

I think we did the honourable thing by training them to look after themselves.

The fact that they have chosen not to do so is their choice, not our responsibility.

So I am afraid I feel less bad for the Afghans collectively than I might do. They were served a decent version of their country by the US and its allies on a plate. It looks like they took the plate and sold it. So how is it our problem they are plateless?

Individually, of course, there are doubtless exceptions.

Basically, it looks like the Afghans won't fight for what they have. It's sad to see.

I guess we'll be financing our own guerillas, assuming the Taliban take the country.

I've forgotten what we call them when they are our friends, "the freedom fighters".

Same country. Much the same mess.

One gets cynical.
