Why didn't they establish a secure perimeter around Kabul?

That seems pretty obvious. And it would surely have been straightforward. Then at least we could leave in an ordery fashion.

What we are doing is terrifically sad, even if it is other things too. The Afghans themselves must take responsibility. But the future is very bleak for a lot of people who don't deserve what is coming.

From our own viewpoint, I hope we won't reap the al qaeda whirlwind.
