Bill Maher is right!
But the problem isn't really that. It's that you have lawyers everywhere, defining anything as right or wrong, legal or illegal, and setting up crazy, unrealistic principles of behaviour when in fact, human behaviour is clumsy, emotional, hormonal and sometimes irrational. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone is doomed to break the laws as written. Because they are written too narrowly.
If you live with all of those lawyers intervening in fairly normal zones of behaviour, all you will get is endless litigation over minor issues of misunderstanding. They'll say "did you have permission to touch her?" to which the human answer is "Do I need a written contract to do so?" The answer in America, increasingly is, yes you do. You want it in writing because even a yes is not enough when people have an incentive to lie. Because now, when people go to bed with one another, there are always four people in the bed. The couple, and their attorneys.
That's the nightmare you have. Cuomo is a nice example of what it looks like when the AG doesn't allow the governor, who is lonely and out of practice, to be a single human being. But she says stoopid, blanket things like "Believe the women." The right answer is, get the attorneys out of our beds, except where the situation is much more serious than this one. Cuomo didn't even reach first base in his hunt for a new partner. She should have just said, quietly, go and apologise for being a bit of a wanker and look for a date elsewhere.
