Basically, if I have to pinpoint the one REASON, it was the fact that he was not planning to have an evacuation with the Taliban in control in Kabul. That is the key detail of this debacle. They were caught like deer in the headlights. Without the Taliban in control in Kabul this would have been a piece of cake.
To be honest, I am not sure anyone expected this to happen so fast, just like that. Biden was told and reassured by everyone that this couldn’t happen like that, which is why he was cocksure in making statements to the contrary earlier in the summer.
The result is the abandoning of a substantial number of our allies. We don’t leave anyone behind, but going into full street battle to get them out, with casualties, mayhem, and all that, it would make the American public go nuts. At this point, and I am really sorry to say this, this is the only way. Maybe they can get them out with carrots to the Taliban in the near future. Right now, I think the stew is cooked.
The other piece is terrorist intelligence gathering. They say they can do it as they are doing it around the world for years now. Ok, we’ll see.
All in all, Americans wanted to get out. I wanted us to stay, make a real deal, not the Trump deal. He didn’t care, he wanted out every which way. He would have done it two years ago, if others hadn’t held him off. We should have stayed with a small force, just like we’ve done historically elsewhere. We should have at least tried for that. None of us, of course, know the details, the specifics, we just have talking heads blowing hot air everywhere they can. So, with that in mind, I’d want us to stay there if possible. The Taliban know they’ll need all the help they can get, and our approach should have been such as to find a way for us to stay in a country that is supposedly ending its civil war. We could have taken something sort of perfect instead of what we now got which basically nothing.
And it is not solely Biden’s fault, despite that fact that I am livid about it.
