I purchased several firearms from a sporting goods store that sold firearms also. Before I could obtain the weapon I had to fill out some form, wait for the store to contact the FBI for a quick background check, and afterward was allowed to purchase and take the weapon with me..

SO I am not sure what else could be done. My son in law had to fill out paperwork and registration on me for building and selling me the AR 15 before I could take it home.

SO , is there ANY continuity ?

Whenever anyone buys a firearm from an FFL, a check is done at the state level (and the state may contact the FBI.) That background check will say something along the lines of "John Doe bought a pistol and two rifles" but NO more than that about the guns... no serial numbers. Paperwork is filled out on the firearm and stays in the building unless the gun store closes in which case paperwork less than 20 years old gets sent physically to the ATF. Older paperwork can be destroyed by the store. But some states including mine allow face to face transactions without any kind of background check. The extent of it in most such states that allow this is that the seller cannot sell to someone who is from another state or who he believes to be a felon, incompetent, underage or otherwise not allowed to own a firearm. The seller MAY ask to see the buyer's ID.
