Thanks also De. As I told Zim, I really did not know that. I ASSumed that purchasing and background checks were all done in every state legally purchased firearms were made..

I learned something today.. That's a good thing! Thumbs Up

What you've described is your state's policy. They require the store to contact the FBI for a background check. Other states require stores to call the police and the police may or may not involve the FBI when they do a background check. The federal government is legally prohibited from tracking serial numbers. The ATF obtains the paper records of sales if a stores closes, but they are prohibited from digitizing them or putting their info into a database. When the Feds want information on a sale, they actually have to peruse the warehoused paperwork by hand... which they almost never do since they don't even have all the records.

There is no consistency between the various states. They all do it differently.
