Not necessarily. When teams have big leads, they start playing defensively instead of offensively. Alabama had an 18 point lead and probably became more interested in eating up clock and not racking up injuries in their offense than in expanding their lead. In the end, it worked - but did turn the game into a nail-biter for their fans. I used to hate it when the 49ers under Joe Montana would do that... have a huge lead, totally change their tactics, surrender most of the lead and then barely win. But they did it over and over in the '80s. It was a winning strategy.

I suspect that if the first quarter had been tighter, Alabama would have had a great second or third quarter. They're just the better team.
