Yesterday's trip took a bit longer than planned, because of a minor adventure and attempt at a good deed.

It was De's turn to drive, so I was napping in the passenger seat when he woke me to tell me he saw a dog running down the median on the highway.

We went to the next exit, turned around, and doubled-back. Luckily, we spotted the dog still trotting around in the weeds. I got De to pull over on the left shoulder, and we tried to get him to come to us, but he bolted (but stayed in the median).

We drove to the next exit (about 6 miles), and turned around again. Just as we gave up finding the pup again, I spotted him about 7 miles down the road, on the right shoulder (so he apparently managed to cross the highway safely). De stopped, and I walked a quarter mile down the road until I saw the dog. He paused, looked at me... and bolted again. I continued walking that direction for a bit, but lost him.

So, I went back to the car and called the local animal control office (Gallup, NM). Hopefully, they were able to trap him before something terrible happened.

We then continued our drive and discussed what we would have done, had we coaxed the dog to us. I told De we would have taken him to a vet somewhere to have him scanned for a microchip (or if he had a collar, called his owner), and if there was none and the dog was deemed healthy, I probably would have wanted to keep him.

Leave it to me to end up being found by a dog on a cross-country trip...
