Mission accomplished. We got our son and his roommate moved to their new, UCSD-owned apartment 11 miles closer to the campus. Saturday was a whole lot of back and forths, taking a carload at a time. We didn't know how much a 15' U-haul would hold so we did everything we could to reduce what we'd be putting into it when we got it. U-haul then screwed up and didn't have a truck for us on Saturday even though we'd reserved it well ahead of time. That turned out to be a good thing, I think.

The new place has about the same size footprint as the old, but it has three bedrooms instead of two and, naturally, three tenants. That effectively makes it much smaller. Whereas each of the boys previously had his own bathroom, each now has shared use of two bathrooms. There is no tub.

Joey lucked out and was assigned by the school to the largest bedroom. This put his old roommate into a real bind since his room is tiny and most of the communal property was his: The big TV, its stand, the stereo, the coffee table, the kitchen set, the lamps, wall art, kitchen appliances, spices, cleaning supplies, dishes, etc. The place... and especially his own room... has less storage, so he's pinched for space. He'll probably decide to get rid of the kitchen set. That's a shame. It's really nice but far too big. The couch, TV and coffee table are too big too, but I imagine they'll keep them. It all would have been better if he'd just bought things that were SMALL, but he didn't. He had no more expectation of moving now than Joey did.

Joey is a Ph.D. Computer Science student. The old roommate, from Chile, is too. The new roommate is a 1st year Computer Science Masters student from China. Since Joey is fluent in Spanish and took a year of Chinese in High School, the roommates are well matched, though I imagine Joey would have been happy gaining exposure to people with more varied interests.

We did a couple of more runs by car on Sunday, got the truck around 2 p.m. and were done with it by 5:30 p.m. Except for our things and a few others the boys left behind to sell or junk later in the month, the old apartment is now empty. We'll probably stay in it for a bit, FINALLY doing some actual relaxing and maybe a little touristy stuff. San Diego isn't new to us, so we may tire of it quickly. Once we're bored with the city and feeling energized (could take awhile. I'm pooped... and not in the Nemo way.) , we'll resume our drive.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
