They also need a new $12,000 battery every 80,000 miles. Many cars that are used only for local driving will take a long time to accrue 80,000 miles - let's say 12 years. By then, they probably won't be worth $12,000. So that means that every 80,000 miles, electric cars bought for $41k+ or more will be totaled for lack of affordable replacement batteries.

Elon Musk is working on a "Million Mile Battery" that will solve this problem. But he doesn't have one yet and possibly never will.
If/when he does, the cheapest Tesla ($41,190) may command a far higher price.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

most Americans don’t think electric vehicles are practical

How long would De’s trip have taken if he had to recharge for four hours every 200 miles?

They might be OK around town but leave a lot to be desired for trips. Not everyone can afford one car just tor local driving.
