Our granddaughter and her family moved to Salinas, CA a couple of months ago and we went up and visited them this past week. Also it gave us a chance to see our GREAT-granddaughter Marina and our new GREAT-grandson Noah. And while we were talking about our visit to our granddaughter's, there was something the we observed that was unusual but when you think about it, it was kind of kool. To start with, our GREAT-granddaughter, who'll be two years old next week, she's being raised bilingual. Her father talks to her in Spanish, and her mother in English, but before she was able to speak, they had started to teach her sign language (our granddaughter and her husband are NOT hearing impaired). Simple signs, like 'milk', 'yes', 'no', 'goodbye', etc. Our granddaughter had read somewhere that children can learn sign just as quickly as regular speech and are often conversant in sign before they learn to clearly articulate words. She's starting to speak now, in both Spanish and English, but she'll still sign and they intend to continue with it. And now that they have a new baby boy, born a bit over five weeks ago, they're planning to teach him sign as early as possible as well. Of course, he'll also be raised speaking both Spanish and English.
