Trooper Charged In 11-Year-Old's Death Denied Bail
Trooper Christopher Baldner was accused of causing the child's death when he rammed the car in which she was a passenger.
ULSTER COUNTY, NY — The New York State Police trooper who was accused of using his vehicle to ram a car that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old will not be leaving jail any time soon.
Trooper Christopher Baldner was denied bail Thursday by Ulster County Judge Bryan Rounds, the Daily Freeman reported.
Baldner was charged Oct. 27 with second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and first-degree reckless endangerment, all felonies.
According to prosecutors, Baldner was patrolling the Thruway in Ulster County in December when he used his police vehicle to ram a car occupied by Tristan Goods and his family.
Their car flipped over and 11-year-old Monica Goods was killed, police said.
Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
Around 11:40 p.m. Dec. 22, Tristan Goods was driving north on the Thruway with his wife and two daughters. They were on their way to visit family for Christmas, prosecutors said.
Near mile marker 92, in Ulster County, Baldner stopped Goods for speeding.
During the stop, police said, Baldner sprayed pepper spray into the car and Goods sped away.
During the pursuit, the trooper rammed his police vehicle into the rear of the Goods' family car twice.
Police said, after the second strike, Goods' car flipped over several times and came to rest upside down.
Monica Goods was ejected from the car and was killed.
