For one thing, if Australia were to do this, a lot of stashed firearms - and I'm sure there are plenty - would resurface and there would be bloodbaths. I haven't heard of that happening. Secondly, Australians would stop getting themselves checked even if they thought they might have Covid-19. I don't think that would be a desirable policy side effect.

I suspect that there is a grain of truth. Perhaps something along the lines of military vehicles being used to transport Northerners to southern hospitals where they can be treated. I'm not knowledgeable about Australia, but a glance at a map reveals that all of the cities I'm familiar with are to the south. That's probably where the best hospitals are found.
