An update:
What we heard through our 'chain of friends' in Michigan, and I've since confirmed this story in a news item, was that the gun used by the 15-year old, a 9mm Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol, was purchased by his father at a 'Black Friday' sale, the day after Thanksgiving. The police reported that the gun had a 15-round magazine, which still had bullets in it, when it was taken by the police officer(s) who arrested the 15-year old. They estimated that he fired as many as 20 rounds, which means that he had to have had multiple magazines with him.
This hit closer to home than we expected. It turns out that a friend of ours from our hometown in Michigan, that her grandniece attends that high school and the 16-year boy who was killed was her best friend's boyfriend. Now we've never met the niece, but we've known her aunt since we were kids.
