According to reports, the increasing contempt toward the government has led to approximately a third of Americans saying that violence against the government is “justified” at times. Apparently, the increase in support of said stance has significantly increased over the past few years.
A Washington Post/University of Maryland survey revealed that roughly 34% of Americans across the political spectrum endorse the notion of situational violence used against the government. Even when breaking down the numbers via political affiliations, 23% of Democrats support the notion, as well as 40% of Republicans and 41% of Independents.
It’s no secret that over the past two years in the United States, protests and riots have become increasingly common – spanning from COVID-related mandates and restrictions to grievances stemming from perceived abuses by or lacking accountability of, law enforcement.
With respect to the reasons cited in the survey of when violence against the government would be justifiable, 22% said it would be reasonable in instances of government intruding upon personal liberties, 15% said in cases where there was a military takeover or democratic collapse, while 3% mentioned the government not accepting election results.
When reviewing polling data from years past, the support of employing the use of violence against the government has considerably risen. Back in 2015, support for the aforementioned was 23%, whereas in 2010 only 16% supported the notion. During the mid-1990s, the idea of using violence against the government only garnered about 13% support.
Per the survey results, the topic of the January 6 incident was speculated upon, with reportedly 92% of polled Democrats alleging that the riot was directly inspired by former President Donald Trump. When Republicans were asked the same question, only 27% attributed blame to Trump for the incident at the Capitol.
Even though the Washington Post/University of Maryland survey pertained to the use of violence against the government, it’s hard to ignore the parallels to other recent studies that have shown a growing distrust for the government.
A September 2021 Gallup poll found that only 39% of Americans trust the federal government in handling both international and domestic issues. When that study broke down specified trust in the three branches, 54% trust the Judicial, 44% trust the Executive, and 37% trust the Legislative.
