About two months later, hospitals began requiring masks. I was being examined pretty regularly at that time but was also worried that hospitals were likely dangerous places. So I came in wearing a P100 mask... which is what professional painters wear to avoid the fumes. The first time I showed up with it, they looked at me strangely but let me pass. The second time, they told me I had to wear one of THEIR masks.

"Your mask protects you but doesn't protect anyone else" they correctly counseled.

"But I WANT to protect me!" I protested.

They relented, but only after telling me I could wear their flimsy mask *over* my heavy P100 if I wanted. So I did. It looked pretty strange. And, yeah, breathing was difficult. Very difficult. I briefly thought I might pass out.. which would have been embarrassing given where I was and why I couldn't breathe.
