The citizens of each state elect their representatives to their state legislature. Originally, the state legislatures elected Senators. The idea ... which was an excellent one, by the way ... was that Senators would be more attuned to state-level issues, which means they would defend the rights of the states against overreach by the federal government. The House of Representatives represents the issues of smaller constituencies. The 17th Amendment screwed up a well-balanced system, which allowed the federal government to run roughshod over states rights and move us toward Socialism. But, as for your stupid contention, you bloviating gas-bag ... under the original system, the PEOPLE most certainly had a hand in electing U.S. Senators because they elected the state legislators. Quit being an idiot, OCU.
