I'm happy to say that the swelling is going down on my foot and movement is returning. Some of the things I can do this afternoon effectively rule out an Achilles tendon rupture. For instance, I shouldn't be able to go up onto my tiptoes, not even a little, if the tendon is severed. Since I can, I think I just sprained the foot in a way that I never have before.

Tearing your Achilles tendon is about the worst thing you can do to your foot barring infection or blood loss, so I'm pretty happy.

I'm looking for some advice. I caught my heel on a stair yesterday and took a tumble. Fortunately I was almost down or it would have been worse. I banged up the right knee I landed on, but it's okay, and I thought I'd slightly sprained my left ankle. I've sprained my ankles many times over the years though and soon realized that it wasn't a sprain. The ankle didn't "roll." I hyperextended the foot as the heel caught and my weight came down on the top of the foot. At least that's what I think happened. I was kind of busy falling at the time.

I walked with a limp the rest of the day but could still get around. I figured that meant the injury wasn't very bad. This morning though the swelling is worse, going from the heel up the back of my leg. I'm sure it's the tendon.

I didn't hear or feel the classic *pop*. The pain is minimal when I'm not using the leg. I can move my toes and flex my foot up and down an inch or two before swelling and pain intervene.

The questions I have are:

• Do I have to see a doctor?
• Is it a tear or a complete rupture (severence of the tendon)?
• Is it, like a sprain, something that will likley heal on its own in a few days?

If the pain was terrible I'd just go to the doc. But I'm currently walking without ever letting my leg get behind or even fully under me and would prefer not to go in if it's not necessary.

Have any of you ever experienced this?
