While I shed no tears for Whoopi, what's going on is ridiculous and sad. Her travails and the aftermath are noteworthy in that they represent a new low for our society and its obsession with shutting people down. They also raise a host of questions.
A person will now be punished over a misunderstanding. Whoopi said or meant to say that Jews and Gypsies are not races and that "racism" isn't the right word for the Holocaust. Is that anti-Semitic? Isn't her comment correct since "race," for most of us, means skin color? If Jews and Gypsies are races, then aren't Christians? Canadians too? Hitler must have thought so. He thought Germans were the MASTER race. But Germany is just a country. Does Hitler thinking it make it so? Didn't he also think blonde, blue-eyed people were their own race? Yet, if someone refers to a "blonde, blue-eyed race," I bet he'll find himself in a world of hurt. Is a race a nebulous term that doesn't mean what the dictionary says ... or is that only the case when Hitler is involved? Is the word a catch-all for any group of people who might garner others' hate? What about gays? What about the handicapped? What about White Supremacists? What race is a person who is both black AND Jewish? Mulatto? Whoops! Can't say that! What about someone who just identifies as a Jew? Should actress Meryl Streep now be #CANCELED for playing a member of the Jewish "race" in Sophie's Choice when she isn't Jewish (though, for a time, she believed herself to be)?
Why was it offensive for Whoopi to point out that racism isn't the right word? Was she Holocaust denying? Was she minimizing the Holocaust's horrors? I don't think so but it's what today's quick-to-offend Jews are claiming.
More importantly (to me), we need to decide whether it's offensive to have an opinion. Where are the defenders of free speech - other than ME, I mean? What about freedom of thought? I'm not sure what Whoopi apologized for (for being right? for being misunderstood?) but society has apparently decided not to accept it. What does that say?
This is nuts.
BTW: Shouldn't Navarro also be suspended for referring to Roma as "Gypsies"? Horrors! A few months ago, she'd have been figuratively lynched for that. https://www.scarymommy.com/stop-saying-gypsy/ A short two years later, it seems to be a non-issue.
I hope Whoopi has a nice vacation. Safe to say, I don't think any less of her over this. I didn't think much of her to begin with.

Whoopi Goldberg suspended from 'The View' following Holocaust remarks
The liberal host previously issued an apology

"The View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended following her controversial remarks about the Holocaust.
"Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments," ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a statement Tuesday evening. "While Whoopi has apologized, I've asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments."
"The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends and communities," Godwin added.
Goldberg went viral on Monday when she argued that the Holocaust "isn't about race," stunning her colleagues at the table.
"What is it about?" co-host Joy Behar asked.
"It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about," Goldberg said.
"But it’s about a White supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies," guest co-host Ana Navarro said as Goldberg attempted to speak over her.
"But these are two White groups of people," Goldberg said as her colleagues disagreed.
Jewish groups condemned the comments, accusing her of minimizing Jewish suffering.
Goldberg attempted to explain her remarks during her appearance on "The Late Show."
"It upset a lot of people which was never, ever, ever, ever my intention… I thought we were having a discussion," Goldberg told Stephen Colbert. "I think of race as being something that I can see… "You couldn’t tell who was Jewish. They had to delve deeply to figure it out… My point is, they had to do the work."
She also told Colbert, "I don’t want to fake apologize…I’m very upset that people misunderstood what I was saying."
Before the pre-taped interview aired on CBS, Goldberg issued an apology.
"On today's show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.' I should have said it is about both," Goldberg wrote in a statement. "As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the Nazi's systematic annihilation of the Jewish people - who they deemed to be an inferior race.' I stand corrected."
"The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never [waver]. I'm sorry for the hurt I have caused," Goldberg added.
Goldberg reiterated the sentiment on Tuesday's installment of "The View," saying she "regrets" her comments. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt also joined the program to educate Goldberg about the Holocaust.
