We heated our house in VA with wood. We had an outdoor wood burning furnace. 500 gallon boiler. It circulated water into the house to a 100 plate heat exchange to our radiators. Worked well. We would load it up with wood twice a day. We burned a lot of wood but wood is cheap..

I think we've turned the corner on winter.

Since early December, our rule has been to use oil heat when it's either windy or the high for the day will be above 32° … and to burn wood the rest of the time. For nearly all of that period, we've burned wood. Wood is cheaper than oil and we like it, but it's not as good at warming the two bedrooms.

Starting right now and for the first time in two months, we'll have 48 continuous hours above 32°. Then there'll be one day of cold. After that, every day but one in the long term forecast (until March 2nd) will have highs above freezing and lows below freezing. That's pretty good for here... where we've had blizzards as late as May 20th.

The forecast is usually wrong; I don't put much weight in what it has to say beyond 2-3 days. Even if it's right, it says nothing about March... which usually has a heavy snowfall or two. But it suggests the worst of what has been a very mild (except in temperature) winter is now behind us.

One of my goals was to use all the remaining firewood. I've got about â…“ cord in the garage and I don't want to have to haul it to the new house. (Yes, I *do* think the house will be done this year - call me an optimist.) A warm March will make it hard getting that much wood burned.
