In the last year before I retired. . . I waged a running war with microsoft updates crashing the computers.

Windows 10 computers. To keep things running, I took 'disk images'of the necessary computers. When they crashed I would re-image the hard drives. Then call in the IT guys to 'wave their magic wands' and get the machines back in the domain so they would work again.

It was horrible.

My advice?
Buy an external hard drive bigger than your computers drive and a second internal drive for the computer.

There is a program called 'AOMEI'. AOMEI bakupper I think it is. Create a bootable USB stick with it. Plug in the external drive and create a 'disk image' of your hard drive. Install the new drive then boot off the stick and 'restore' the image to the new drive. Unplug everything and boot off the new drive - everything should be there.

And one would then have two hard drives. One to boot and run off, and one for a ready-to-go spare.

Zim.

Same here. But unlike you guys, I've been fine with Windows 10 installed on a 2014 Dell Precision M4800 laptop. In fact, I'm thinking about buying a second one as a backup in case this one goes ka-put one day.

If you've installed Classic Shell, you may hardly notice the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 7. I've found Windows 10 to be FAR more stable than Windows 7. Except for the two recent "Blue Screen of Death" errors that have caused me concern for my laptop's health, Windows 10 has never crashed.
