Yikes! Is that why I've had so much trouble digging holes??

Naw, there's no permafrost. I'm around 43° latitude, the same as mid-Oregon or even northern Massachusetts. But I've got a little elevation, and for whatever reason, this part of the country gets frequent snow. It was snowing hard this morning, for instance. But not for long and what fell has already melted off.

The ground does freeze during the winter, though. The ice also results in "heaving" - but not the kind clo is associated with. Heaves bust up concrete that's not thick enough. It even causes new rocks - sometimes huge ones - to surface in my field each year. I don't quite understand the mechanics of it, but I suspect it has to do with water in the soil that expands as it freezes. Everything above the ice is forced up.
