Sounds like I am diabetes insipidus PARTIAL. Putting that another way, one would expect the concentration of something they're measuring to be 1,200 in a young person, 600 in a person my age and 200 in a person with diabetes insipidus. But it's 400 in me.

That leaves me in No Man's Land. They can see something is wrong but they still aren't sure if it's my head or my kidneys. So they're going to give me a shot of the hormone I might be short of and see if my kidneys respond to it. If they do, then my body isn't producing enough of the hormone and they have their diagnosis. If the kidneys don't react, then they might just be unresponsive to the hormone and the doc will have to do some more testing. But not today. I've been in the hospital for 6 hours... a nurse in the room with me the entire time... and in another hour, I'll be able to leave. This is obviously a very expensive test...

Re: “I hope the test results are negative. You don't want diabetes in any form... It ain't the worst but it is hard on kidneys and leading cause of renal failure which my mother died from...”
Whether it's diabetes or not, I've got a thirst issue. If it's diagnosed as diabetes insipidus, it's not really diabetes. It's a pituitary/hypothalamus problem where the brain doesn't produce the hormone that directs the kidneys to stop diverting liquid to the bladder. Diabetes insipidus patients keep producing urine even when they're dehydrated. That's what they're checking me for.

Per the endocrinologist here, a normal person produces about 1.5 liters of urine per day. In the 4 hours of my test, I've produced 250ml, 175ml, 200ml and 175ml even though I haven't had anything to drink in more than 8 hours. If those numbers are indicative of what I'm doing 24 hours per day, I'm creating well over 4 liters per day. And that explains why I'm always thirsty.

If this is what's going on, what I need is a medicine called Anti-Diuretic-Hormone (ADH) and I'll be good to go. Diabetes Insipidus isn't anywhere near as bad as sugar diabetes. It's a rare disease, but even without treatment, people don't usually die from it.
