Per this article, the modern restaurant is a fairly recent “invention” of capitalism. Apparently, before about 1800 only the nobles had private chefs, and other people HAD to do their own cooking. I find that a bit mind-boggling, but I will accept it at face value for now.

After all, prior to 1800 there were effectively ZERO corporations in the world. (Not actually zero, as there were a handful of public utility corporations, but they looked and behaved NOTHING like current fictitious entities). And I've read that prior to 1913, the ONLY encounter the average citizen had with the Federal government was when they went to their local post office. Imagine that. Wouldn't it be lovely to have that Utopia back again?
