Try growing potatoes in a bucket.
Five gallon bucket.
Drill a few drain holes in its bottom
Put in two inches gravel
Four inches straw
Three or four seed potatoes
Cover with straw
As the potatoes sprout add more straw & seed potatoes
Repeat until bucket is full
Harvest your potatoes

I've been planting a lot of potatoes. I've never had much luck with them before, but I read they like sandy loam and less heat, so I have a place to try. And the spuds were all throw away, from bags that were sprouting already, if I didn't plant them.

If I do more planting I am going to concentrate on basic calorie foods, because I think those are most important to master for general preparedness (as opposed to strictly pleasure or economics).

So, the short list for that would be:
potatoes
corn
beans
squash

These are also attractive to me because they are substantially set-and-forget in terms of not being too susceptible (I hope) to pests and the large turkeys and peacocks and squirrels in the area. Other than that, I have a lot of mature fruit and nut trees which deserve some attention but mostly take care of themseles with a little water from time to time.

Oh, and fish. I have a lot of them. I would like chickens for eggs, but there are a lot of predators I don't think I can fight off effectively.
