Re: “Fortunately, a single gallon of oil has more than THIRTY THOUSAND calories... or enough to feed ten people for a day. Hmm. That's not really as many as I expected.”
It's always a mistake to trust the internet. A gallon of oil doesn't have 30,000 calories. It has 30,000 Calories. Capital C. That's a thousand times more. And that means a gallon of oil has 30 MILLION calories, or enough to feed ten THOUSAND humans for a day.

That's considerably better, isn't it? It means that a measly 700 barrels can feed the U.S. population for a day. 20,000 barrels can feed the world. That's just 1 percent of what the U.S. consumes daily.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Re: “particularly since it takes 10 calories of oil to make 1 calorie of food in today's world”
Well, SEVEN to TEN calories. Not necessarily ten. But your point is made. Fortunately, a single gallon of oil has more than THIRTY THOUSAND calories... or enough to feed ten people for a day. Hmm. That's not really as many as I expected. Maybe it's time for a breakthrough in food production.

Any idea what the relative difference is between plant-based and animal-based food? Therein might like our salvation.
