We installed an outdoor wood furnace in our old house. 500 gallon plumbed into a water to water heat exchanger in the house. Then circulated through our radiators. We burned a lot of wood. Whole logs.
In Sweden they build huge masonry wood burning stoves in the center of homes. Somewhat small firebox and a long convoluted flue. Large mass of brick/stone/mortar. Retains the heat.
