Micro,

Most of the time I am in areas which I think COULD generate more than enough power from solar to power house+car IF there were sufficient batteries, charging panels, and -- most of all -- NEED.

There are a lot of qualifications in that last paragraph, so I am not kidding myself.

What drives me nuts, is why so little common sense has been deployed since 1970, when the US went past peak oil. As of that point, we knew we had a vast weakness. Still, building standards haven't changed to sufficiently encourage what we know about southern exposure and geothermal. Someone here said they don't understand why HYBRID vehicles weren't more encouraged. Indeed, it seems they are DIScouraged (unavailable) even though we don't yet have the 100 year batteries we would need to make local power generation work.

I suggest, again, that everyone do sufficient reading about what peak oil actually means and implies. It is wise to either personally do something about it, or mathematically DISPROVE IT in energetic terms (again, economics and existence of in-ground oil are irrelevant if the energetics don't work).

Otherwise it is sort of like playing Russian Roulette on the "theory" that there aren't bullets in the gun, or the bullets can't penetrate your thick skull. No need to be conservative! This is one of those things you DON'T want to get wrong. I recommend you err on the side of being sure you can produce your own power, in sufficient quantity, that you CAN survive your minimal lifestyle.

It's easy enough to test: flip off your central breaker and turn off your gas or propane. Can you make it a week? A month? A year?

Most of us couldn't make it beyond a DAY, and yet we persist in the delusion that we are strong and don't have a problem.

WHY is it that NOBODY wants to talk about WHERE exactly is all the electric going to come from to charge these car batteries that they are pushing so hard.

We already have a grid overload in many places so this is going to be a problem.

Secondly, nobody seems to want to talk about the COST of charging one of these batteries. WHAT exactly does it cost in the current electric BILL and what would be the cost of driving as in cost/mile ????

As Fizzy noted yesterday in an oil discussion certain costs need too be known and assessed to ascertain necessary COSTS .

I have read about HOW LONG it takes to charge one of these "modern day wonders" and if ya has all night to "fill up" and don't care about a very limited range and high cost per mile driven, well you should buy two or three of them...

But the information is being intentioanlly Nnon-disclosed and not brought to the attention of the public in general..

WHAT EXACTLY is the fuel cost (electric) per mile to drive one of these feel good about yerself cause you are so stupid as to believe you are saving the earth, and atmosphere...

THAT to me is what the elephant in the room is.

WHERE is all the electric that will be needed to charge these things going to come from because THAT will be quite a substantial LOAD on the grid ? HOW MUCH money will that cost to charge a battery all night long on yer household electric, and WHAT is the cost per mile driven ?

UNtil those numbers are disclosed imo the whole thing is nothing more than a bunch of crap and feel good about yerself nonsense fromm people like the Sierra Club and Save the Planet extremists..

Just my two cents on electric cars and the big mysteries that surround them... But hurry up and get rid of our gasoline vehicles so we can pay more for driving them and run out of electric because coal is bad for generating electric as is NUCLEAR powered plants.. They only work everywhere else in the world but for some reason they are taboo in the United States...
