My opinion.
Solar panels on rooftops with the idea of taking some of the edge off 'peak demand' electrical generation is not a bad idea. 'Planting' solar cells in fields is a bad idea - because one can not grow food crops in those fields, nor can one grow trees to suck some of that carbon back out of the air in those fields.

Fiz > IMO ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH CURRENT "CAPITALISM" IS THAT TOO OFTEN IT Externalizes /SOCIALIZES COSTS WHILE PRIVATIZING PROFITS.

That is a very slipper statement - one that can be easily abused.

What is the overall benefit to society for having a highly reliable electrical power grid? Again, my opinion, this is an area where 'socialized costs' are part of the cost of getting the benefits of, say, air conditioning on demand. And yet, the charlatans are finding ways to inflate the 'socialized costs' and counting what CO2 emissions add to those costs . . . But CO2 is NOT a pollutant. It is a vital component to life on this planet.

We also have the EPA which, again, my opinion, has worked wonders in cleaning up many of our rivers and much of our air. Smoke stack scrubbers on our power plants and ending willy-nilly polluting of our rivers.

In other words, the 'socialized costs of capitalism' can be dealt with - when they are real- through legislative regulations.

Mostly I would call windmills, as currently done, substantially a mistake. From what I understand, in addition to other problems, the blades only last a few decades and then CANNOT be repaired NOR RECYCLED.

IOW, a boondoggle. Non boogdoggles?
1.0 A properly built, south facing troumbe wall
2.0 a planned excavation more than 5 feet under ground to take advantage of geothermal temperatures being 50 degrees
3.0 excellent insulation in a structure built to last 100+ years.
4.0 Reuse of greywater in a drought area.

All of those things PAY you to install them, and have paid since the 1970s. Windpower *can* make sense, but often doesn't.

Can you name some other good & intelligent incentives? PV didn't make any sense for most situations until recently. So I regard PV research as *finally* paying off.

But mostly what I am speaking of are things such as above, which made sense even in the 1970s, but required some extra money be spent at the time of construction to be recouped over decades.

IMO ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH CURRENT "CAPITALISM" IS THAT TOO OFTEN IT Externalizes /SOCIALIZES COSTS WHILE PRIVATIZING PROFITS. That is not really capitalizm. Forcing someone else to pay the price for harm YOU do isn't capitalism because it encourages corruption at a judicial/government level.
