#4. The final story, and a very quick one.

After the "church" sale, we found a traditional garage sale on the same road. We didn't buy anything, but the seller had two Briggs & Stratton generators, 5,500 watts, STILL IN THEIR BOXES, for sale. He said he wanted $600 apiece. I know that's a good price. I don't know if it's a great price. At the time, mostly, I wasn't sure whether 5,500 watts would be enough to power the new house through an outage. Actually, it only needs to keep the water/heat going, and the freezer, and the refrigerator. Other appliances can be turned off.

I got the guy's phone number, left my builder a message and photo of the generator's box (shown below) and, half an hour later, asked my builder what he thought. He said he thought the electrician had said I'd need 7,000 watts. Too bad.

I called the seller back and told him the generator wouldn't work for me.

Half an hour later, my builder called again. He spoke with the electrician and now thought the generator WOULD work. The 8,500 starting watts described on the box are what made him change his mind. I think he also liked the brand.

I called the seller back, chased out there within the hour and bought the thing. I'm not sure what it's worth. Amazon has one B&S 5,500 watt generator for $695. But it's got another, a B&S 5,500 watt generator with 6,500 starting watts, for $1,499. Did I get a good deal? I honestly have no idea, but it's one more thing I can remove from my shopping list.

This is my second generator that hasn't been taken out of its box, btw. The other is a Costco 5,000 watt generator I must have bought 13 or 14 years ago. I sure hope it works. I hope they both work. But I really don't know.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Here's a photo of our new washer. And a photo of four pennies my wife found in the washer after her first load, two towels. The penny at the top is one that we supplied, just so you guys would know that the camera wasn't responsible for all this coin abuse.

I figure it must be a good washer if it can scrub the faces right off of today's quality American money!
