I'm so sorry. Please give my condolences to your wife. It's terribly depressing, outliving those you know and love, especially immediate family.

I understand your sense that we are living too long, but I have a different take. More progress has been made on extending life than on extending mental acuity. Doctors and scientists have a lot of work to do yet! Genetics plays a huge role, though. My dad lived to 96, but parts of his brain did not. After about 90, much of who he'd been was gone. His siblings, except for the ones who died young, are all on the similar paths: Life into the mid-90s but with severe mental decline. It's horrible.

My mother, on the other hand, died at 87, sharp as a tack to her dying day. So it doesn't have to be my father's way. Some suffer dementia and strokes in their last years. Some don't at all. Personally, I'd rather go the way my mom did, though her route was more painful. At least she stayed herself.

Now, in YOUR case, I don't see any sign of mental slippage. Something else might get you one of these days, but I think your brain is going to be intact until the end. If you outlive the Missus, you may wish it weren't so. I hope she's doing well.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

All is not well in Toadsuck

...mz ribits crazy sister is on her last few steps in the race of life. She has been in and out of the hospital several times and now they have her in a hospice. She will be kept clean and out of pain. Death will be soon. She is going to be cremated afterwards.

...it's not the being dead that bothers me. It's the process of getting there. Pain with every breath; losing your memory and your mind in the process; well meaning friends giving you false hopes when the facts say otherwise. Methinks that we are living too long these days.

...mz ribit's best friend has a daughter the age of my sons and she has cancer. They have done all kinds of tests and all kinds of therapy but there is no hope for her either. She is receiving hospice care as well. She is leaving a husband and two or three kids who are not out of high school yet. Her husband seems to be a good man in a tough situation but he is well equipt to handle adversity.

...as for me, I shall plod on day to day hoping to prevent so many red eyed widder women from throwing themselves off barn roofs in despair if I should pass.
