Well Boss,
Seems there are several different distributions of Linux . . .

I have had excellent luck with the 'Cinnamon Mint' flavor.

http://linuxmint.com/download.php

I think this is where I downloaded it from not too long ago.
And, so far, it has worked fairly well on every computer
I've ever installed it on.

It is close enough to windows that one should be able to run it. And, there is a 'button' somewhere in the 'Start Menu' that will enable one to locate, and install a LOT of software - free. Including the Libre open office suite.

(I would suggest one buy a new hard drive, swap the hard drive out of the computer, and install Linux on the new one. That way if things go horridly wrong one can swap the original drive back in and get right back where one started from.)

Open Office also seems to be able to open Microsoft office files. So, use a thumb drive to copy ones files off and test on the copy.

The only downside I have seen to date is that while Windows has multiple programs which can back up ones entire hard drive. . . Linux is finicky - one about has to find the 'right' program or version of the program to create a disk image of the Linux disk.

Zim.
