This actually interests me because at ine time in my life it affected me as I changed course later in life.
When you no longer are under a company medical plan which is paid largely by the company, a person begins to find out what medical insurance really costs. And you begin to examine what risks you may really have or not, and look at all kinds of options.
I know I did.. And yes, Buckwheat care was in play at that time also..
I could afford , fortunately, to get what I wanted but at very high monthly cost, and truthfully the subsidized ACA buckwheat plans were not inexpensive either and the coverages were, shall we say, less than great.
So I investigated more and more and discovered a thing called short term medical insurance which could be bought at six month intervals... You could adjust copays and deductibles and max out of pocket costs and see what the effect on a monthly premium would be.
As it was only for two of us, and we had a few years before medicare would kick in, this is what I did. My insurance agency was a great help and we simply signed up every six months for actually better insurance than I had at my company, and premium payments were reasonable.. Less than $300./month. Now you can buy these plans and they are not for just short limited time frames where you have to re-apply for the term. It can be ongoing..
I guess what I am really feeling is that for many people with decent incomes but no medical coverage at their employer I feel for them as their options are really few.
I am grateful that God allowed me to become successful and provided for me all the days of my long career.
I haven't forgotten what it is like being an ordinary person who has concerns week to week or even month to month.. SO I have empathy for the many who do have these real strruggles and concerns..
Very grateful and thankful for the Lord's blessings upon me and my wife all these years... It certainly was not my doing.
