A day or two later... the same trip... we were driving in part of the park where there was nothing to see, but several cars had pulled over. We stopped to see what was going on. Fifty yards into the woods, everyone was taking photos of an elk. (I think that's what it was. It was definitely big. REALLY big.) I decided to circle around and and get a little closer . . . I guess I got a little TOO close because it stopped what it was doing and started coming after me, so I hightailed it out of there. After, my gal made me promise not do anything like THAT again, and I didn't.

Later in the trip, we were awakened by a loud snuffling noise outside our tent. I got out and found a gigantic bear moving away from our camp. I circled around to get a little closer. Unfortunately, it was dark and those photos didn't turn out.

BTW, you may also notice some burned wood next to the elk. Our trip was a year or two after a big chunk of the park burned down. I remember that even Old Faithful was in jeopardy.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

As is often the case, I'm going through boxes of books. The current one happened to include a photo album from the early 90s. Inside, there are (among other things) 4"x6" pics of my girlfriend's and my drive to Yellowstone from Sacramento. The year isn't certain. It could be '89. Maybe '91 or '92. The buffalo photos brought back a memory.

While backpacking, there was a big meadow with several dozen scattered bison. My recollection is that I circled around and tried to get closer to a pair that were grazing. By the second pic, a third was moving in... perhaps to protect them. In the third, it's closer still. By photo #4, it was apparent that the approaching bison was larger - a bull, I assume. By #5, the bull was getting agitated and coming toward ME. I can't tell in #5 whether it was lowering its head to charge or just grazing, but either way, I knew I was far too close and hightailed it out of there.

We continued our hike. My gal' made me promise I'd never do THAT again and I assured her I wouldn't.
