Congressional Staffers Unionize After Viral Instagram Account Exposes Poor Working Conditions

Staffers in Congress announced their intent to form a union Friday, after the effort gained steam thanks to a viral Instagram account publishing anonymous reports of poor working conditions on Capitol Hill and a series of lawmakers said they’d support the workers organizing.

The newly formed Congressional Workers Union announced staff in both lawmakers’ offices and congressional committees will unionize, citing a recent internal poll that found 91% of Congressional staffers surveyed want increased work protections.

The union called on Democratic lawmakers to “lead by example” by supporting their staffers, after backing other unionization efforts by workers outside of the Capitol.

Unionization efforts have been ongoing for more than a year, the statement noted, but the push has gained traction in light of the Instagram account @dear_white_staffers,

Dear White Staffers: It’s Time We Listened

The Instagram account that shines a light on why working on Capitol Hill can be so disheartening.

February 8, 2022
Judged by the demographics of the senators and representatives, the 117th Congress may be the most diverse in our nation’s history. Behind the scenes, though, congressional staffers remain overwhelmingly white.

Capitol Hill is something of an insular fraternity. It has its quirks, its inside jokes, its own wonky language. Back in 2007, when I started working in a congressional office, the only smartphones people used were BlackBerrys, and social media was basically nonexistent. In those days, we traded jokes on chat programs and email listservs, or even specially created boutique websites—our own little digital universes and clubs. And even though gossip would occasionally leak out into the Capitol Hill rags, and sometimes even into the bigger news outlets (ahem), for the most part the life and times of congressional staffers was veiled from the outside world.

OK, guys, we have a confession to make. When it comes to the congressional Squad, we were wrong. It turns out they’re not completely terrible. They actually have something very valuable to bring to the political discourse. We had to wait a while to find it, but it looks like our patience has finally paid off.

Behold:

More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) ~ BREAKING: Staffers in 8 U.S. House offices have filed to form the first unions in Congress.

The first staffers to unionize work in the offices of @RepCori, @RepChuyGarcia, @RepRoKhanna, @RepAndyLevin, @RepTedLieu, @AOC, @Ilhan, and @Rep_Stansbury.

Entertainment value is still value, and these days, it’s extra valuable. So thank you, AOC and Cory Bush and Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna and other proud progressive representatives for giving us something to be grateful for.

Jay (@OneFineJay) ~ All Democrats, and IIRC, all of them are from the "Justice Democrats" faction.

More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) ~ Congressional staffers say a culture of abuse sparked the drive to unionize.

They’re severely overworked & underpaid. Some are even on food stamps & can’t afford rent.

Because of course they are. It’s just so perfect.

Jay (@OneFineJay) ~ Which kinda goes to show the unions are only a necessary relic under shitty employers.

Hold up, Jay ... do you mean to say that the über-progressive wing of the Democratic Party is full of shi**y employers?

NeverTweet (@LOLNeverTweet) ~ What abuse did @AOC and @IlhanMN inflict on their workers to cause them to unionize?

Well, according to at least some of the staffers, there was emotional, mental, and physical abuse (and even racism!).

And members of Congress like AOC have just sat there and allowed that culture of abuse to fester until staffers finally got up the courage to speak out? For shame. For shame!

NeverTweet (@LOLNeverTweet) ~ “I’m such a horrible boss that my workers are unionizing.” ~ @AOC @IlhanMN and @CoriBush

That’s basically their message in a nutshell.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (@Ilhan) ~ Today, staffers in our Congressional office took steps to start the process of unionizing.

Solidarity forever with all workers fighting for their right to form a union and organize!

Sunny McSunnyface (@sunnyright) ~ LOL ... okay have fun with that!

We know we sure will.

Who’s the Baddie (@whosthebaddie1) ~ LOL, this is too good.

danny laub (@dannylaub) ~ This is one of the most incredible unintentional self-owns of all time.

And we’re absolutely here for it.
