I have very fond memories from my first trip to Yellowstone. (And my second . . .)

I remember taking a long walk to a place called 'Mallard lake'. And part of the hike took me through one of the burnt out forest sections. I dubbed it the 'crispy crittered forest'.

I also remember one of the ranger talks in which the guy said that the forest fires opened 'lanes' through the forest opening things up. Meadows grew up where the trees had burnt out. And that bears like to hide in the woods next to the meadow in hopes of catching something like a young deer for dinner.

I saw no bears my first trip to Yellowstone. For my second, I took my GirlFriend. She said she wanted to see a bear . . . I told her I didn't think we would see any bears. Next day we say six of those beasties.

A day or two later... the same trip... we were driving in part of the park where there was nothing to see, but several cars had pulled over. We stopped to see what was going on. Fifty yards into the woods, everyone was taking photos of an elk. (I think that's what it was. It was definitely big. REALLY big.) I decided to circle around and and get a little closer . . . I guess I got a little TOO close because it stopped what it was doing and started coming after me, so I hightailed it out of there. After, my gal made me promise not do anything like THAT again, and I didn't.

Later in the trip, we were awakened by a loud snuffling noise outside our tent. I got out and found a gigantic bear moving away from our camp. I circled around to get a little closer. Unfortunately, it was dark and those photos didn't turn out.

BTW, you may also notice some burned wood next to the elk. Our trip was a year or two after a big chunk of the park burned down. I remember that even Old Faithful was in jeopardy.
