The 5.56mm and .223 cartridges are effectively identical in almost all respects. Generally, the 5.56mm produces a little higher chamber pressures than the .223.

It's illegal in Virginia to hunt deer with .223 because it's unlikely to kill the deer quickly with a single shot.
