People should be aware that excessive amounts of oral vitamin D3 carries risk. I believe 5,000 ius per day bestows the same benefits as 10,000. I take 6,000 - but only because I take a 5,000 iu tablet and a multivitamin as well.

I probably don't need any D3. I'm getting a LOT of sunlight these days. Gardening has its benefits.

What is vitamin D toxicity? Should I be worried about taking supplements?

by Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.

Vitamin D toxicity, also called hypervitaminosis D, is a rare but potentially serious condition that occurs when you have excessive amounts of vitamin D in your body.

Vitamin D toxicity is usually caused by large doses of vitamin D supplements — not by diet or sun exposure. That's because your body regulates the amount of vitamin D produced by sun exposure, and even fortified foods don't contain large amounts of vitamin D.

The main consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can cause nausea and vomiting, weakness, and frequent urination. Vitamin D toxicity might progress to bone pain and kidney problems, such as the formation of calcium stones.

Treatment includes stopping vitamin D intake and restricting dietary calcium. Your doctor might also prescribe intravenous fluids and medications, such as corticosteroids or bisphosphonates.

Taking 60,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity. This level is many times higher than the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for most adults of 600 IU of vitamin D a day.

Doses higher than the RDA are sometimes used to treat medical problems such as vitamin D deficiency, but these are given only under the care of a doctor for a specified time frame. Blood levels should be monitored while someone is taking high doses of vitamin D.

As always, talk to your doctor before taking vitamin and mineral supplements.

Zim, I know you wrote the below some time ago, but I wanted to acknowledge what you said, again.

In particular, IMO, *HIGH* Vitamin D correlates strongly, almost perfectly, to *REDUCED* deaths, in particular. According to the graphs I've seen, from data taken around the world, if your vitamin D is ABOVE 50 NG/DL your risk of death is about ***ZERO*** ...and, as I recall, that is without regard to age or other co-morbidities.

I take 10,000 IU/day, except during summer, and I highly recommend everyone else, who can afford 25 cents/day, do the same as we go into this fall.

I'm not sure what is going to happen next. Maybe Covid is eventually going away, but it sure isn't acting like it got the message. Indeed, it seems to be spreading faster and faster, mutating and mutating, and Covid right now seems to me a lot like a hornet's nest that got kicked a few times too many.

I also think all should have supplemental zinc, at a minimum. If you take it in tablets, make sure you eat food first, so it doesn't upset your stomach. And quercetin (derived from apples) is a good ionophore to improve its uptake into cells, where it impedes viral replication. Or, you can do what I prefer, get a throat spray like Therazinc, sold on Amazon.

Perhaps elderberry syrup does the equivalent?
