That's all good -- in principle. But Our Masters HAVE no principles.

Almost all debt is dischargeable or modifiable in bankruptcy court. The PREDATORS who run the system have arranged that if they do things inside corporations, they never get stuck with anything. Other adults are generally able to discharge debts and get a new beginning in personal bankruptcy court.

So, how did it come to be that STUDENTS -- fresh out of childhood and 12 years of forced, "free", brainwashing cum "education" -- have been stripped of bankruptcy court protection for student debts? Who did that? Why did they do that? Cui Bono?

Hopefully you know the who, when, and where of this history and can figure out the rest? You don't know? Shame on you.

So, yeah, there should be no government guarantee of student loan debt.

But first, student debt should ABSOLUTELY be dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Again, how did it come to be that the most naive, really just out of childhood, have been singled out for no protection from financial exploitation and bad judgement? With all you are getting, get understanding.

Hmmm. I wonder if Biden and Clinton had anything to do with the odd state of bankruptcy law? Naw, that can't be! That would be too perverse, and public schools would be teaching it in history and civics class.

Re: “If I had, say, $20,000 in student loans . . . and 'somebody' 'forgave' $10,000 of it. My debt load would be halved”
The average outstanding student loan amount, including interest, is $32,000. But MANY owe far more. And those who owe less are probably the higher income workers who've been actively paying off their loans and don't need forgiveness.

As you said, the program should be scrapped. Students should go to banks directly and apply for a loan the same as would anybody else. For collateral, they can put up whatever the banks will take. Perhaps 10 percent of every future paycheck until the debt is paid. And if they don't wanna do that, then too bad.
