Hi Fiz!

Yes sir indeed!! Modern tach helps are somewhat of an obstacle to actually knowing how that TI Scientific calculator comes up with answers!

IQ's. Wow . THOSE are ALL incredibly LOW.. I know what mine is thru testing. HOw does anyone function at those levels? That's eye opener and jaw dropping..

When I was in high school I learned to use a slide rule. Same in engineering college. Don't know if you ever had the "pleasure" but they work fairly well.. Ribit may have used one.. Not as convenient as a good calculator though. And now we have computers that do the thinking and processes for us so we don't understand the underpinnings.. THAT is why many people I talk to haven't a clue about basics much less anything advanced. They are good with a cell phone, and sometinmes at directing their production flow but do not understand the equipment and mechanics of most of what they use, including the finishing processes and the fabrication and packaging processes..

Fortunately I was exposed to and HAD all of those things in my own faciities and knew all of them inside and out..

But that test was mind blowing for 8th grade.. I am still working on some of the questions on it..

I know. I love things like this.. It challenges me and I need all the challenging I can to keep my mind stimulated and actively functioning.

Thanks for posting that again! I will enjoy it all day long except for when Ohio State puts a Butt Hurt on Notre Dame !

Go DAWGS and Go HORNS ! Go CATS ! Tough opener for them at Arkansas against a bunch of over fed HOGS ! loL!!!!!

Hopefully the Cats are big enough to compete with these guys.. Size is always an issue with my Alma mater. I know our recruiting has much improved after the past two seasons but Arkansas is a BIG bunch of guys!

Although we did beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame so we stacked up pretty well there..

Then ya get to real big time futzball like GEORGIA and Alabama! Ouch..

Beldin is going to suffer another season I am afraid. The Horns should be improved but it will take another year or two for them to return to former days.. They are on roght track though..

Catch y'all later!

micro....

You are welcome, Micro! It certainly puts into question the idea of progress! We've "progressed" so much that, on average, we (without the tech crutch) can't do half of what we could do more than a hundred years ago. With progress like this, how long before we can't tie our own shoe laces? I'd say about 500 years should do it!

What's disturbing to me is when I wonder how much of this is social, how much is education, and how much is -- possibly -- a real collapse in intelligence? We know (well, some of us know) that different countries have significantly different average IQs. Yes, ethnicity also shows variation.

It is both true, and a common wives tale, that IQ is biased -- but that is different from asking if it is objective. A good IQ test IS objective. Indeed, I understand they can quite accurately measure the IQ of pre-verbal infants by measuring brain wave response as various stimuli are applied.

A good question is what "we" can do about it. IQ is mostly genetic -- like height, or any other attribute where baseline is determined fundamentally by genetics. Nutrition, developmental environment, and accidents along the path of life LIMIT how much of IQ potential gets realized.

I don't think focusing on race is helpful, but it is only commonsense, and hopeful, that IQ is - ultimately - CULTURAL. It is against the culture of the US to talk about that. But not talking about something doesn't make it go away; indeed the opposite.

Changing your culture will likely not affect YOUR IQ, but it will affect what humans you hang out with and influence choice of values, and ultimately who you mate with. Natural selection through time can select for IQ potential, just like any other inheritable trait.
