Of course I think the Washington Post article is a joke; almost everything they write has to be taken as propaganda more than objective.

Thanks for the table, I hadn't looked at it before! With that in view you must be correct and I misapplied that first multiplication of percents. Do you think I am also miscalculating the 10.8%?

"To date, the survey shows about 9 in 10 Democrats and 6 in 10 Republicans have gotten vaccinated. ...

The survey also asked about people’s INTENTIONS, and that’s where the gap grows even more. While 58 percent of vaccinated-but-unboosted Democrats say they will get a booster as soon as they’re able, 18 percent of vaccinated-but-unboosted Republicans say the same."

Or if we look at "intentions" it is more like 18/58:
(6/10*18%)=10.8% vs (9/10*58%)=52.2%. So...5 vs 1?

So, almost 5 Dems will boost until they croak vs 1 Repubs?

fizzy:

Re: “Because the two events are DEPENDENT, according to the wording in the article. Only 60% of Repubs got an initial vaccination. And OF that 60% only 32% got the boost. So the percent of ALL Republicans who are vaccinated + 1 time boosted is only 32% of the 60%. Put conversely, only 19.2% of Repubs are both initially vaccinated AND single boosted.”
If I understand, you're saying just 32% of the 60% of Republicans who got the initial shot also got the booster, making 19.2% in all. I'm not seeing that. The survey says 63% of Republicans and 91% of Democrats responded affirmatively to the survey question "Have you personally received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, or not?"

A breakdown of the 63% of Republicans shows it to be comprised of 32% who received both the initial shot and the booster and 31% who are vaccinated with no booster. Together, they make up the 63%.

Same for the Democrats except that they're 62% boosted, 29% not boosted, making 91% total.

Nothing meaningful comes from multiplying the 63% of Republicans who were initially vaccinated OR both initially vaccinated and boosted ... by the 32% who were vaccinated AND boosted. You say "And OF that 60% only 32% got the boost" while it's actually that of the 100% of Republicans surveyed, 32% got the boost.

The chart below might make it clearer. And, yes, the Republicans are outpacing the Democrats in shying away from vaccines and boosters - which I think was your broader point. But it's not as extreme as you suggested.

Personally, I think the whole thing is a joke. Pollsters lie. This survey was performed for the CDC to give them the result they wanted and the story was reported by the Washington Post. You aren't going to get a whole lot of truth from THAT!
