Once upon a time ... not too terribly long ago ... I read about a similar line of thinking in terms of jet fighters. You still use the F-22s and F-35s, but you augment them with a horde of much cheaper (but very fast and maneuverable) fighter planes with more conventional weapons systems. Thought was, the F-22s and F-35s could hit the opposing air force with their long-range (beyond visual) weapons systems, while an overwhelming swarm of the cheaper fighters with shorter range weapons could close with them. Seems like a good idea to me.
